What Does A Russian Blue Cat Look Like? Appearance Guide

|  6 min read

According to the TICA Official Russian Blue Breed Profile, today's Russian Blue has "emerald eyes and a medium blue coat frosted with silver and the angelic smile that is a distinguishing feature of the breed."

That description, brief as it is, captures the three features that make a Russian Blue unmistakable once you have seen one: the coat, the eyes, and the expression. No other breed combines all three. A grey cat with the wrong eye color is not a Russian Blue. A cat with the right eye color and a flat, single-layer coat is not a Russian Blue. A correctly built cat with ghost tabby markings is not a purebred adult Russian Blue. The appearance of this breed is specific enough that identifying a genuine example is a skill, and this guide walks through every element of it.

What does a Russian Blue cat look like? A Russian Blue is a medium-sized, fine-boned cat with a dense double coat of even blue-grey tipped with silver, vivid emerald green eyes, prominent whisker pads that create a faint upward curve at the corners of the mouth, and a lean, athletic build that gives the impression of standing on tiptoe.

What Color Are Russian Blue Cats?

The Coat Color

The short answer: one color only. According to the CFA breed standard, the coat must be "an even, bright blue throughout," with lighter shades preferred and no tabby markings permitted in adults. The CFA disqualifies any Russian Blue showing a color other than blue.

In practical terms, that blue is a medium blue-grey, neither dark charcoal nor pale silver-grey. The specific shade varies slightly between individual cats, and lighter coats are favored in the show ring, but the requirement for evenness throughout is absolute. No shading, no darker points, no lighter patches.

The Silver Tipping

What distinguishes a Russian Blue from any other grey cat is the silver tipping on each guard hair. The CFA standard requires "guard hairs distinctly silver-tipped giving the cat a silvery sheen or lustrous appearance" with "a definite contrast noted between ground color and tipping."

This tipping is what creates the breed's signature shimmer in direct light. The coat appears to shift between blue and silver depending on the angle and light source, giving the breed a luminous quality that photographs rarely capture accurately.

Russian Blue Cat Colors: Are There Other Options?

In North America, CFA and TICA recognize only the blue coat. Some international registries, including ACF and GCCF, also accept Russian White and Russian Black as variants within a broader Russian cat family. These variants are not recognized by CFA and are not considered Russian Blues under North American breed standards.

What Color Eyes Do Russian Blue Cats Have?

Vivid green, exclusively, in adults. This is one of the breed's most strictly enforced characteristics, and it is also one of the most useful identification tools.

The Eye Color Progression

Russian Blue kittens are not born with green eyes. The progression follows a consistent pattern:

  • Birth to approximately 8 weeks: eyes appear yellow-grey or greyish blue

  • 8 to 16 weeks: yellow becomes more pronounced; a green ring begins forming around the pupil by four months

  • 4 to 18 months: green expands inward from the pupil ring toward the outer iris

  • 18 months onward: full vivid green achieved in most cats; some mature slowly to two years

The CFA breed standard states that cats whose eyes are not completely vivid green at maturity "should be penalized," with the penalty determined by both quantity and vividness of the green present. An adult Russian Blue with amber, yellow, or blue eyes is not a purebred example of the CFA or TICA standard.

The Eye Shape and Setting

Beyond color, the eyes themselves are large, rounded, and set wide apart on a broad skull. This wide-set placement, combined with the breed's prominent whisker pads and gently upturned mouth corners, produces the characteristic "Mona Lisa smile" described in the CFA's own breed commentary.

What Does a Russian Blue Cat Look Like in Terms of Size and Build?

How Big Are Russian Blue Cats?

Russian Blues are a medium-sized breed. The table below gives the typical adult size ranges by sex.

Measurement

Female

Weight

Build

Fine-boned, lean, muscular

Fine-boned, lighter

Despite their lean build, Russian Blues carry more muscle mass than their fine bone structure suggests, and a well-conditioned Russian Blue feels substantially more substantial than it appears. The CFA standard notes the cat "appears to stand and walk on tiptoes" due to its long, fine-boned legs and small, rounded feet.

The Head and Face

The head is a smooth medium wedge, wider in skull than it is long, with no sharp angles or flat planes. Key features:

  • High, prominent cheekbones that create a slight shadow below them

  • A straight nose with no stop or break from the brow line

  • A blunt muzzle, neither pointed nor squared

  • Prominent whisker pads that give the lower face its characteristic fullness

  • A strong chin perpendicular to the nose tip

The profile shows two flat planes: one from nose tip to brow, and a slightly longer one from brow to the back of the skull.

The Ears

The ears are large relative to the head, set wide apart, and pointed at the tip. The skin is thin with very little interior furnishing, giving the ears a translucent quality in natural light. Ear placement contributes significantly to the breed's alert, attentive expression.

The plush double coat texture is one of the most reliable physical tests. Running a hand against the grain of a true Russian Blue's coat, it holds its shape and springs back rather than lying flat. The ACFA breed description compares it to "running a silk scarf through your hands."

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a Russian Blue cat look like?

A Russian Blue is a medium-sized, fine-boned cat with a dense, plush double coat of even blue-grey tipped with silver, vivid emerald green eyes, prominent whisker pads, and a lean, muscular build. The coat's silver tipping creates a distinctive shimmer in light that no other grey cat breed replicates.

What do Russian Blue cats look like compared to other grey cats?

The combination of a plush double coat with silver tipping, exclusively vivid green adult eye color, prominent whisker pads creating an upturned expression, and fine-boned build distinguishes a Russian Blue from any other grey or blue-grey cat. No single feature is unique; the combination is.

What color eyes do Russian Blue cats have?

Vivid emerald green, in all adult examples recognized by CFA and TICA standards. Kittens are born with yellow-grey eyes that transition through yellow before green develops from a ring around the pupil outward, completing the transition by 18 months of age at the latest.

Are there Russian Blue cats in colors other than grey?

Not under CFA or TICA standards in North America. Some international registries, including ACF and GCCF, recognize Russian White and Russian Black variants, but these are not accepted by CFA and are not considered Russian Blues under North American breed standards.

How big are Russian Blue cats?

Males typically weigh 10-12 pounds; females 7-10 pounds. Both sexes are medium-sized with a fine-boned, lean, muscular build that appears more slender than it is substantial. Full physical maturity is reached between 18 and 24 months in males, 12 to 18 months in females.

Why does my Russian Blue's coat shimmer in the light?

The shimmer comes from silver tipping on the guard hairs, required by the breed standard. Each guard hair carries a silver tip that catches light differently from the blue-grey base, creating a contrast and luminosity that changes depending on light angle. This is a defining feature of the breed and should be visible in any well-bred adult.

Our experience with Purebredkitties was wonderful! Communication was great, and we even got to FaceTime with our kitten before bringing her home. She was exactly as we expected and is already doing great with our family after just two days. One small note is that pedigree papers weren't included and cost extra, which was a bit pricey since she arrived spayed. Overall, even though it was expensive, it was worth it. The quality and size of our kitten are amazing!

I'm already looking forward to adopting another fur baby with Maria's help in the future. I'm absolutely thrilled and can't thank you all enough!

Proud mom of four Sphynx kitties! I adopted all of my adorable feline friends from Maria at purebredkitties.com, and I couldn’t be happier. Each one is a treasure, and working with Maria has been an absolute delight!

The whole journey to bring our fluffy bundle of joy home was fantastic. Maria is incredibly kind and always ready to answer all our questions. I really appreciate how seriously they take the health of the cats. Our kitten arrived with a minor case of the sniffles, likely from the airport travel, but it was easily and quickly resolved. Plus, the video call we had to meet our little guy beforehand was a wonderful way to get a glimpse of his personality and feel confident in our decision. I'm definitely recommending Purebred Kitties to all my friends who are looking to get their own Maine Coon.
