Exotic Cat Breeds Born in California: Ragdoll, Bengal and Toyger

California has an unusual claim in the cat world: several of today's most striking domestic breeds were developed here. The Ragdoll began in Riverside, the Bengal was championed by a California breeder, and the Toyger was created in Los Angeles. This collection brings those breeds together with other rare-looking companions, all fully domestic and bred for family life.

What is an Exotic Cat Breed?

"Exotic" is an informal term for domestic breeds with rare looks or limited availability, such as hairless, curly-coated, spotted or striped cats. It does not mean wild animals. California restricts wild cat species such as servals and caracals, which generally cannot be kept as pets without state permits.

Is Exotic Cat Breed For Me?

Rare breeds often come with specific needs: sunburn protection for a Sphynx, daily vigorous play for a Bengal, or regular brushing for a Ragdoll. If you enjoy hands-on care and an engaged companion, one may suit you well. Our specialists can steer you toward lower-maintenance options if needed.

Choosing an Exotic Breed

Match exotic cat breeds to your home and climate. Coastal apartments suit calm breeds like Ragdolls, active households in the suburbs often love Bengals or Toygers, and hot inland areas call for extra care with long coats. Compare temperament, grooming and health testing before falling for a photo.

Reputable Breeders

Good breeders register their cats, share parent health tests and let you see the kitten live on video. They explain breed-specific concerns honestly, such as HCM testing in Ragdolls and Sphynx. Avoid anyone selling wild cats or unregistered "hybrids" as pets.

Special Needs

California's climates vary widely, so plan for your region: cool coastal fog, hot Central Valley summers or mountain winters. Keep every cat indoors, away from coyotes, traffic and sun exposure. Secure tall cat trees to walls as part of earthquake preparation.

Need to Know

• Every kitten here is a domestic breed, not a wild animal.

• California restricts wild cats such as servals and caracals.

• The Ragdoll, Bengal and Toyger all have California roots.

• Anchor tall cat trees for earthquake safety.

• Plan care around your region's climate, from fog to desert heat.

• Ask breeders for breed-specific health test results.

• Indoor living protects cats from coyotes and traffic.

Our experience with Purebredkitties was wonderful! Communication was great, and we even got to FaceTime with our kitten before bringing her home. She was exactly as we expected and is already doing great with our family after just two days. One small note is that pedigree papers weren't included and cost extra, which was a bit pricey since she arrived spayed. Overall, even though it was expensive, it was worth it. The quality and size of our kitten are amazing!

The whole experience of adopting a pet with this fantastic team has been nothing short of wonderful. Now, I have the joy of being a devoted pet mom to a gorgeous kitten I named Princess. I'm already looking forward to adopting another fur baby with Maria's help in the future. I'm absolutely thrilled and can't thank you all enough!

Proud mom of four Sphynx kitties! I adopted all of my adorable feline friends from Maria at purebredkitties.com, and I couldn’t be happier. Each one is a treasure, and working with Maria has been an absolute delight!

The whole journey to bring our fluffy bundle of joy home was fantastic. Maria is incredibly kind and always ready to answer all our questions. I really appreciate how seriously they take the health of the cats. Our kitten arrived with a minor case of the sniffles, likely from the airport travel, but it was easily and quickly resolved. Plus, the video call we had to meet our little guy beforehand was a wonderful way to get a glimpse of his personality and feel confident in our decision. I'm definitely recommending Purebred Kitties to all my friends who are looking to get their own Maine Coon.

I recently welcomed my second Sphynx from Purebred Kitties, and just like my first experience, everything went perfectly. This time around was just as smooth and delightful. I adore both of my cats—they're healthy, have amazing personalities, and are absolutely precious.
