Disclaimer: Keep in mind that while the traits described generally apply to this breed, each cat is distinct with its own personality and looks. To learn more about a specific kitten, please review their profile information or speak with the adoption specialist for detailed insights.

History and Origins

Ships carried cats for centuries to control rodents, and many believe the Maine Coon's ancestors were long-haired ships' cats that came ashore in New England ports. Over generations, those cats adapted to cold coastal weather with dense coats and big paws. It's a fitting story for a port city like San Diego, even if the exact origin remains uncertain.

Personality

Maine Coon kittens are curious and outgoing, and adults stay calm, adaptable and good-natured. They tend to cope with moves, new rooms and visitors better than many breeds. Most get along with children, dogs and other cats.

Nutrition and Feeding

Feed a complete, high-protein kitten food in measured meals and transition to adult food on your vet's advice. If you move, keep the same food for a few weeks to reduce stress. Fresh water and some wet food support hydration year-round.

Grooming and Care

Without big seasonal temperature swings, shedding can be steady rather than seasonal, so brush two or three times a week all year. Comb the ruff, belly and britches to prevent mats. Trim nails and check ears regularly.

Specific Needs

Mild weather tempts many owners to let cats roam, but coyotes live in San Diego's urban canyons, so keep your cat indoors or in a secure catio. If you're a military family, plan ahead for relocations with up-to-date records, a microchip and an airline-approved carrier. Provide XL litter boxes and sturdy cat trees.

Need to Know

• Coyotes live in urban canyons; keep cats indoors or in a catio.

• Brush year-round; shedding is steady in mild climates.

• Military families should keep records and microchip info current.

• An airline-approved carrier makes future moves easier.

• Ask whether parents were DNA-tested for HCM and SMA.

• Adults commonly weigh 13–18 lb (males) and 8–12 lb (females).

• Choose XL litter boxes and sturdy cat trees.

FAQs

Do Maine Coon cats handle moving well?
Better than many breeds. Keep familiar bedding and food, set up one quiet room first and expand their space gradually.

Were Maine Coons really ships' cats?
Many believe their ancestors arrived on ships in New England ports, but the exact origin isn't documented.

Do they shed more in a mild climate?
Shedding tends to be steady year-round rather than seasonal. Regular brushing keeps it manageable.

Can my cat go outside in San Diego?
The weather is fine, but coyotes, traffic and other risks are not. A secure catio offers safe outdoor time.

How is my kitten delivered to San Diego?

Our experience with Purebredkitties was wonderful! Communication was great, and we even got to FaceTime with our kitten before bringing her home. She was exactly as we expected and is already doing great with our family after just two days. One small note is that pedigree papers weren't included and cost extra, which was a bit pricey since she arrived spayed. Overall, even though it was expensive, it was worth it. The quality and size of our kitten are amazing!

The whole experience of adopting a pet with this fantastic team has been nothing short of wonderful. Now, I have the joy of being a devoted pet mom to a gorgeous kitten I named Princess. I'm already looking forward to adopting another fur baby with Maria's help in the future. I'm absolutely thrilled and can't thank you all enough!

Proud mom of four Sphynx kitties! I adopted all of my adorable feline friends from Maria at purebredkitties.com, and I couldn’t be happier. Each one is a treasure, and working with Maria has been an absolute delight!

The whole journey to bring our fluffy bundle of joy home was fantastic. Maria is incredibly kind and always ready to answer all our questions. I really appreciate how seriously they take the health of the cats. Our kitten arrived with a minor case of the sniffles, likely from the airport travel, but it was easily and quickly resolved. Plus, the video call we had to meet our little guy beforehand was a wonderful way to get a glimpse of his personality and feel confident in our decision. I'm definitely recommending Purebred Kitties to all my friends who are looking to get their own Maine Coon.

I recently welcomed my second Sphynx from Purebred Kitties, and just like my first experience, everything went perfectly. This time around was just as smooth and delightful. I adore both of my cats—they're healthy, have amazing personalities, and are absolutely precious.
