History and Origins

Short-legged cats were reported for decades, but the modern breed traces to Blackberry, a pregnant stray rescued in Rayville, Louisiana, in 1983. TICA accepted Munchkin cats into its new-breed program in 1994 and granted championship status in 2003. CFA, ACFA and GCCF still do not recognize the breed, citing welfare concerns about the mutation.

Personality

Outgoing and confident, they love chase games and often "borrow" small shiny objects to stash away. Many sit up on their back legs like meerkats to get a better view. They usually get along well with children, other cats and cat-friendly dogs.

Nutrition and Feeding

Keeping a short-legged cat lean is one of the best ways to protect its spine and joints. Feed a complete, high-protein diet in measured meals and limit treats. Adults typically weigh about 5 to 9 pounds, so small changes in weight matter.

Grooming and Care

Shorthaired cats need a weekly brush; longhaired cats need brushing two or three times a week. Short legs can make grooming hard-to-reach areas difficult, so check the belly and hindquarters for mats. Trim nails and check ears regularly.
