History and Origins

Breeders in Britain began developing solid-colored cats of Siamese type in the 1950s, and early U.S. imports were called Foreign Shorthairs. American breeders adopted the name Oriental Shorthair at a meeting in New York City in the early 1970s, and CFA granted championship in 1977. Bicolors were added in 1985 and the Oriental Longhair in 1995.

Personality

These cats are curious, acrobatic and opinionated, often learning to fetch and walk on a leash. They want to be part of every activity, from cooking to video calls. Oriental cats left alone too long can become vocal or mischievous, so a companion pet helps.

Nutrition and Feeding

Feed a complete, high-protein diet in measured meals to keep the long, slim body in shape. Food puzzles turn mealtime into exercise for a busy mind. Ask your vet to check body condition at each visit, since the breed's light frame shows changes fast.

Grooming and Care

The Oriental Longhair has a fine, silky, medium-length coat without a woolly undercoat, so a weekly comb usually keeps it tangle-free. Shorthairs need even less, just a quick rubdown. Both benefit from regular tooth brushing and nail trims.

Specifics Need

California homes should be earthquake-ready for pets too: anchor tall cat trees and shelves to wall studs, and keep a carrier where you can reach it fast. Add your cat's food, water, medications and records to your household quake kit. Ask breeders about PRA DNA testing and dental health in their lines.

Need to Know

• Anchor tall cat trees and shelves to wall studs for earthquake safety.

• Keep a carrier and cat supplies in your quake kit.

• The longhair coat has no woolly undercoat and rarely mats.

• CFA lists more than 600 color, pattern and coat combinations.

• Ask about PRA DNA testing in the parents.

• Expect a talkative cat that wants constant company.

• A companion pet helps if you work long hours.

FAQs

Is the Oriental Longhair rare?
It is less common than the shorthair. Both coat types can appear in the same litter, so availability changes over time.

How many colors do Orientals come in?
CFA counts more than 600 combinations of color, pattern and coat length, including solids, tabbies, smokes, silvers and bicolors.

How do I keep my cat safe in an earthquake?
Secure furniture and cat trees, keep a carrier handy and include pet supplies in your emergency kit. Microchipping helps if your cat bolts.

Can Oriental cats be left alone during the day?
They cope better with a companion. A second social cat, toys and window perches help during long workdays.

How will my kitten get to California?
Air cargo or an in-cabin flight nanny can reach LAX, SFO, San Diego or Sacramento. Ground delivery within 500 miles and pickup are also options.

Purebredkitties has been absolutely wonderful. They made everything so easy and stress-free. Adoption specialist Kim A was fantastic, always going the extra mile to help me. She even responded to my email at 3 am her time! 😊 This whole experience has been truly heartwarming and rewarding.

Our experience with Purebredkitties was wonderful! Communication was great, and we even got to FaceTime with our kitten before bringing her home. She was exactly as we expected and is already doing great with our family after just two days. One small note is that pedigree papers weren't included and cost extra, which was a bit pricey since she arrived spayed. Overall, even though it was expensive, it was worth it. The quality and size of our kitten are amazing!

The whole experience of adopting a pet with this fantastic team has been nothing short of wonderful. Now, I have the joy of being a devoted pet mom to a gorgeous kitten I named Princess. I'm already looking forward to adopting another fur baby with Maria's help in the future. I'm absolutely thrilled and can't thank you all enough!

Proud mom of four Sphynx kitties! I adopted all of my adorable feline friends from Maria at purebredkitties.com, and I couldn’t be happier. Each one is a treasure, and working with Maria has been an absolute delight!

The whole journey to bring our fluffy bundle of joy home was fantastic. Maria is incredibly kind and always ready to answer all our questions. I really appreciate how seriously they take the health of the cats. Our kitten arrived with a minor case of the sniffles, likely from the airport travel, but it was easily and quickly resolved. Plus, the video call we had to meet our little guy beforehand was a wonderful way to get a glimpse of his personality and feel confident in our decision. I'm definitely recommending Purebred Kitties to all my friends who are looking to get their own Maine Coon.

I recently welcomed my second Sphynx from Purebred Kitties, and just like my first experience, everything went perfectly. This time around was just as smooth and delightful. I adore both of my cats—they're healthy, have amazing personalities, and are absolutely precious.
