In the mid-1970s, two hairless kittens later named Dermis and Epidermis were born to a barn cat on a Minnesota farm. Together with hairless cats found in Toronto, they became foundation cats for the modern breed. Breeders carefully outcrossed their descendants to build healthy, genetically diverse Sphynx cats.
